Review and discuss with students the roles of each Community Helper on our island

Q&A:
Why is it important that we have doctors, police officers, firefighters, nurses, teachers, dentists, etc.?
Do your parents work? What is their job?
What can you do to be part of your community?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Would you want to be a nurse, doctor, police officer? Why?

Language Arts
New vocabulary words for Community Helper

Recite words with students

Have students spell out words

Students recite words

Poem/Song:
Read poems to students about each role of a community helper

Activity:
Community Helper – collage

Students will be given newspapers and magazines to search for community helpers and cut out

Students will paste on chart paper provided by teacher

Students will present their work to their classmates

Note: Students work will be posted.

Extra Curricular Activities
Students who are done with their collage will continue working on their Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? story necklace.
Math
Review and discuss with students on Nickel

Teacher will allow students to continue exploring with “Nickel”

Teacher will have students demonstrate how to count nickels by 5’s.

Note: students will be assessed if they know how to count nickels.

Students who are done with their Nickel activity sheet will work on their community helper popsicle sticks.

Procedures: Students will color, cut, and paste to popsicle/craft sticks.

Review and discuss with students on Sight and Touch

Teacher will discuss with students about using Sight and Touch senses together

Students will learn new vocabulary words for Senses

Activity:
Students will play a touch game as they are being blindfolded
Teacher will demonstrate

Goal: To identify and describe the textures (slippery, rough, fuzzy, smooth, etc) of different items

Sensory Note: to help students identify each object, their fingers will give them clues as they feel them

Students will recite the poem on Senses

Journal Writing
Students will write on their My Sense of Touch Journal
about what they learned today

Book Fair: April 2009
Teacher will discuss with students how to create a book for their book fair display

Students will be asked what they want to write about

Each student will write one sentence and draw a picture that illustrates it

Students will draw and color of their favorite event in the story. Then they will write a sentence.

Students will make balloon monsters

Game: Students can play a game of catch with their creatures and see how their faces changes

Another game: Hide the Monsters

Teacher will play music and see students will find the monsters
Students must find all monsters before the music stops

Students line up outside.
Teacher guide students into the classroom.
Take out shoes and place them on the rack as students enter classroom.
Take out “HOMEWORK” folder and place on teacher’s desk.
Place school bags on the counter.
Go to the “GREEN” carpet and sit down. On the Carpet
Teacher will take attendance.
Teacher will assign a student to bring attendance sheet to the office.
Students will sit in a circle.
Students and Teacher will sing Good Morning/Afternoon song.

Balloon Monsters


Subject: Art
Materials: flour, balloons, colored felt, scissors, funnel, googly eyes, and glue


Objective: swbat creatively make their balloon monsters
swbat play games with their creatures


Procedures: 1. use the funnel to fill each balloon with flour.
2. tie the end of the balloon tightly.
3. cut a smile, teeth, or hair out of colored felt.
4. glue them on, along with the googly eyes.
5. make heads into funny shapes.


Hint: Students can have a game of catch with their creatures and see how their faces changes.
For more fun, play a game of “Hide the Monsters” (teacher will hide all creatures, play music, students must find all creatures before the song stops)
